3 rules once you have joined a non-profit board/committee

Here are my three rules for a more successful start once you have joined a non-profit board/committee:

  1. Sit down with everyone on the committee for a one to one as soon as possible and ask what is important to them. Find out how you can help them. Are there articles or other things of value that you can share with them? Make introductions to your contacts when you think there will be a mutual fit.
  2. Volunteer to get involved as soon as possible and take on responsibility to prove you can be trusted.
  3. Understand the dynamics and politics of the group. For example avoid annoying the leadership by telling them what to do or trying to implement ideas before getting buy-in.
